Physical basics of torque
Torque is a physical quantity that describes how strongly a force acts on a body at a certain lever arm. The longer the lever arm and the greater the force, the greater the resulting torque. It is not only the total value of the torque that is decisive, but also the angle at which the force acts. This is referred to as the rotation angle. A precise interplay of torque and rotation angle is necessary to prevent damage to sensitive components. The torque T can be calculated using the simple formula T = F x s. Where:
T stands for the torque in Newton-meters (Nm)
F is the force acting at the end of the lever arm in Newtons (N)
s is the length of the lever arm in meters (m)
The greater the acting force F and the longer the lever arm s, the higher the resulting torque T. This explains why a long wrench generates more torque than a short one.
